Fair Grade Forests (FGF) traces its roots to Source Pacifique, a locally owned and operated regional startup founded in 2015. In 2017, Source Pacifique launched FGF as a specialized initiative to provide private blockchain certification services for forests and indigenous sustainability. By combining cutting-edge technology with on-the-ground environmental work, FGF quickly gained recognition for its open-source development approach, resulting in over 100,000 lines of software code dedicated to bringing transparency and accountability to forest conservation efforts.

Among FGF’s most notable achievements is a 43% grant awarded by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), acknowledging the project’s focus on digital innovation to empower indigenous communities and protect environmental resources. In addition, intellectual properties (IP) related to FGF are being registered in Papua New Guinea (PNG), reflecting the initiative’s commitment to local ownership and long-term growth. Notably, version 2 of the platform introduced a fully functioning DAO (Distributed Autonomous Organization) in 2022, modeled after the Oro Province Council of Chief Birdwings Governance.

Central to FGF’s success is an ever-expanding network of partners and collaborators. Locally, FGF has engaged with institutions such as the European Union, UNITEC, BSP, the Department of Forestry, Deloitte, and UP through interactive workshops. Beyond these regional alliances, FGF maintains international collaborations with Griffith University, aligns its efforts with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and supports programs under the UNFCCC most notably REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). By integrating C020301 (Farming), C200207 (Biodiversity), and C110401 (Cultural Heritage) codes, FGF demonstrates its commitment to multi-sector synergy in addressing environmental, cultural, and community-focused objectives.

Moving forward, FGF continues an “intentional re-platforming” of its software architecture to stay in line with industry maturity and best practices. This proactive approach ensures that the underlying technology remains adaptable capable of scaling to new regions, accommodating diverse stakeholders, and reinforcing FGF’s holistic vision of shared value creation, carbon-credit transparency, and meaningful forest stewardship.
